The Challenge For Softech

On the High Speed-1 Channel Tunnel line, the Purfleet Station Level Crossing Replacement project was initiated to enhance safety and improve transportation efficiency by replacing an existing level crossing with a highway bridge. This required the lowering of Overhead Line Electrification (OLE) catenaries to ensure proper clearance between the new highway bridge and the electrification system.

Softech’s Solution

Softech overcame the OLE clearance challenge at the new highway overbridge by conducting a detailed feasibility study to assess the technical and safety implications of lowering the catenary. The proposed solution was documented and submitted for GRIP 3 approval, incorporating feedback to finalise the design

High speed 1 Over Head Lines

Supported by safety assessments and impact analyses, the refined design achieved GRIP 4 approval. This ensured safe clearances between the electrification system and the bridge, delivering a compliant and practical solution.

The Result

The Purfleet Station Level Crossing Replacement project exemplified the significance of meticulous planning, feasibility evaluation, and regulatory compliance in OLE design for infrastructure upgrades. By conducting thorough site assessments, feasibility studies, and obtaining GRIP 3 and GRIP 4 approvals, the project paved the way for a successful transition in principle from a level crossing to a highway bridge, all while ensuring safe and efficient rail operations.
