Elton Siding Signalling and Telecoms

Softech reduced CO2 emissions by nearly 1,000,000 cubic metres each year. We did this by conceiving and delivering ES3-8 for the Elton Siding Signalling and Telecoms project.

The Challenge For Softech

Quinn Glass Plant stands as one of the largest glass bottle manufacturing and filling facilities globally, having commenced operations in the early part of 2006, operating incessantly 24 hours a day, 365 days a year since its inception. Situated adjacent to the Hooton – Helsby line, Quinn Glass sought continuous enhancements to its site and operations. Softech proposed to build a new rail siding for the delivery of raw materials, such as sand and lime, by rail instead of by lorries on the road. We successfully developed options, scheme plan and detailed designs for this rail siding. After which we also undertook the installation, test and commissioning. As a result, we saved nearly 1,000,000 cubic metres of carbon emissions every year!

Softech’s Solutions

Softech undertook the comprehensive design, development, and installation of the rail terminal project at the Quinn Glass site in Elton, Cheshire, facing numerous challenges from day one due to the involvement of various disciplines and stakeholders. The project required integrating new equipment and modifications into an aging interlocking system, adding complexity to the task.

Elton Siding Rail Telecoms Design by Softech

Softech implemented new GSP (Ground Shunter’s Panel) along with new points and Signals to establish communication system facilitating shunting operations to-from new Siding.

The Result

Developing a new siding within the rail network has yielded significant benefits, notably the removal of approximately 200 lorries from the roads. This reduction in road traffic not only alleviates congestion and reduces carbon emissions but also enhances road safety and minimizes wear and tear on infrastructure. Furthermore, the increased efficiency in transportation through rail contributes to cost savings and promotes sustainable logistics practices, ultimately fostering a more environmentally friendly and economically viable transportation system.
