Project Overview
T22 signal was a 4 aspect, filament lit, colour light, signal with position 4 and 5 junction indicators at Norwood Junction. T22 was situated on an, overhead span gantry together with another 4-aspect signal, T20, which was fitted with a position 4 JI. T22 applied to the Up London bridge Slow Line, (ULBS), and T20 applied to the adjacent Up London Bridge Fast, (ULBF), situated to the right of the ULBS in the London direction. T22 and T20 signals were commissioned around 1985 as part of the Brighton Line resignalling scheme. Since its commissioning, there had been 19 CAT “A” SPAD incidents associated with T22.
19 Category A SPAD incidents were associated with Signal T22 since its commissioning which called for a more radical approach in finding the problem and its solution. After review, signalling scheme plan was produced by Softech for Norwood junction, proposing many alterations. Signal sighting review was conducted and changes were proposed to Signal T22 and T20 along with their AWS magnets. Review was carried out for the repositioning of speed boards on the approach to Signal which were also considered contributing factors for T22 SPADs.
